Demolition and Reconstruction

This exhibit was created in response to the tragedy of untimely deaths and the effects of trauma and grief in survivors. I am mourning death as well as severed relationships as I confront the demolition site. Perhaps new patterns can emerge both internally and externally. Death has a way of revealing schisms that already existed. Ultimately, beyond all opinions and power structures, we will all die and return to the earth and the stones. Indeed, we carve out only a very temporary existence from the elements.

These photographs were taken at a demolition site in San Antonio across from my apartment and in a graveyard in Real de Catorce, Mexico. The burial site in Mexico had much in common with the demolition site in the material make-up but it was arranged with love, creativity and intentionality-so personal and handcrafted-each grave being dug by hand and covered with…
