Joan Frederick lives in San Antonio, Texas and is an artist, writer, photographer and Indian art historian. She grew up in Oklahoma where the largest number of Indian tribes were relocated at the end of the 19th century, but she moved to San Antonio during the oil crash of the 1980s. The diverse Mexican heritage she found in south Texas closely mirrored the Indian culture she had left in Oklahoma, and as she says, “Our southern brothers took me in.” She won a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in 1995, and her biography of contemporary Kiowa painter T.C. Cannon stands as one of the most important books in the history of Native American art, because Cannon is widely considered to be the Van Gogh of Indian art who helped change the face of Native American art into the “new wave” scene which characterizes the genre today. Frederick’s latest work focuses on preserving information about the culture and art of Native Americans and also on her photography which profiles the two cultures, both Native American and Latino, in which she now resides.
