Field Journal: Tucson, New Works by Charlie Kitchen (First Friday)

“Field Journal: Tucson is a continuation of Charlie Kitchen’s exploration with the large format photographic process. Kitchen employs a technique of 4x5 in-camera collage that offers an alternative form of image making, the negatives of which are produced almost entirely in the field. This body of work examines the way in which different forms of mark making can be translated through traditional photographic mediums.   

Through an experimental masking process, Kitchen exposes his film with vinyl masks adhered to acetate and overlays multiple registered exposures, resulting in a fully in-camera collage process. By means of a vinyl cutter, Kitchen is able to translate brush strokes and other forms of mark making through the large format process in this new body of work.”
