Zavala opened Not For You Gallery at the Blue Star Arts Complex last year with her partner, Edward Perez.
Creativity was discouraged in the conservative, religious household Ursula Zavala grew up in on San Antonio's South Side.
Her parents tried to steer her toward a practical career as a doctor or lawyer, but Zavala was more interested in finding her way in the less-tangible realm of art. Some of her earliest art-making memories center around collages she made from junk mail — specifically Toys "R" Us circulars she fished from the mailbox.

Under the alias Acidwinzip, she began sharing digital collages of Nokia phones, Slurpees, Whataburger takeout, Geometry Dash and Lana Del Rey
Her parents hoped she would become a doctor or lawyer; instead, she gravitated toward art.

I really admire artists like Ursula Zavala who create spaces for unique expression. Her journey reminds me of Draw Climber—constantly adapting, finding balance, and pushing forward creatively no matter how tricky the path gets.
Her parents wanted her to become a doctor or lawyer, but melon playground was more interested in making her path in the world of art, which is less tangible.
